Complaints of being "friendzoned" have become extremely common over the last few years. I've read a lot of posts where people (usually men) complain about someone putting them in the friend zone. In response, I've recently seen an increase in posts responding to such claims that people are not required to go out with someone else just because a person is nice to them. This is true, but the majority of posts seem to differ from my view on what it means to be friendzoned.
A kind rejection is not the same as being friendzoned.
A bit about myself. I am 33 years old and single, and have been single pretty much my whole life. I was a pretty ugly teenager with low self esteem and am now an average-looking, somewhat awkward man. I have been rejected a LOT. And while rejection isn't pleasant, it does not compare to being friendzoned. I've been friendzoned only a few times.
This is where it gets a little confusing, because almost every woman that has rejected me has wished to remain or become friends. That post-rejection offer/request that many receive are often perceived as friendzoning, but they aren't. Such an offer usually means (in my experience) one of two things.
1) "I don't find you attractive but genuinely enjoy being around you. I still want to talk to you and have you in my life."
2) "I am not interested, but you don't actively make me cringe and I don't want to be mean."
I'm sure there are other variations. I did not include "I might like you but I am already with someone" because I don't view that as rejection so much as just bad luck.
So if that isn't friendzoning, then what is? I'll share a particularly devastating example from my (crooked teeth having, greasy-haired, thick glasses wearing, pimple-covered) teenage years. I was incredibly smitten with a lovely young girl. She was pretty, kind, good at drawing, and a good friend. We'd been friends for years, in fact, and she was my closest friend at the time. She knew early on that I wanted to go out with her, but she wasn't interested. She "didn't see me that way." Now, that is not necessarily friendzoning, as what it really meant was that she wasn't attracted (and I would not have been attracted to me at that time either, so no faulting her taste).
Well, one day she developed feelings for another guy, who was kind of a douche to her. I didn't know him that well, but the vibe I got was that he wasn't really interested in her, but was willing to lead her on and have fun with her when he was bored and had nothing going on. One day it was too much for her. She spent the better part of an hour crying on my shoulder (literally on my shoulder, was a very long hug). At some point during the embrace, she said "why can't I find a man like you?"
To me, that is friendzoning.

Perhaps, but I think this is a very common pitfall that a lot of guys fall into. We men have been conditioned to expect a happy ending. We have been told, by dozens if not hundreds of "chick flicks", Disney movies, rom-coms, and what have you, that if the woman of our dreams isn't initially attracted to us, that's okay. Just hang in there, be persistent, and eventually you'll wear her down. She'll see you for the "diamond in the rough" that you truly are.
So that's why men, upon being told the infamous "let's just be friends" line by the object of their desire, think: Okay, I still have a shot. I'll be there for her when she needs me, I'll be her shoulder to cry on, I'll be the quintessential Nice Guy, and when she realizes what a jerk she's dating, she'll come running to me.
The problem is that this almost never works. You know it and I know it. Unfortunately, this isn't something that comes automatically wired into the male brain. When a man thinks "She'll see what a Knight in Shining Armor I am if I'm her friend long enough," the woman assumes that he sees the relationship the same way that she does, and assumes he's in the friendship for the emotional connection and support, and nothing more.
Obviously men and women can be friends. But not, I'm convinced, if one party has an unrequited attraction to the other party. If this is the case, I think it is better if the two take some time apart from each other, as Ellipsis and her ex did above.

my friend posted on her fb about getting her husband's visa renewed and then he could apply for american citizenship. and she's an american citizen and they're married. i thought you just had to marry a citizen to become a citizen in the US.
