There are many many ideas and schemes for nail flagging. It seems (to me) unlikely for a generally accepted code to evolve, and I think that's a good thing - no rigid system could capture the diversity of personalities and wishes one could flag. But it'd be great if everybody could agree that differently coloured nails say "talk to me if you want to find out what I'm flagging". And maybe ONE generally agreed upon scheme that says "stay away".

Another thing I'd propose is that yes, all fingers have meanings attached to them, but that flagging asks that you not flag every single finger because it would be potentially very confusing. you could mirror your flag and I like this idea, so if you were flagging on your middle finger and your ring finger because that level of the code pertains to those two fingers, so you're flagging orange on both middle fingers and glitter on your ring fingers, that could mean, "My partner and I are looking for a third" but glitter on both middle fingers and orange on your ring fingers means, "I'm looking for a couple." this is taking the model that the ring finger indicates relationship and the middle finger is about sex, which is pulling from admittedly western north american common finger symbolism, and the notion that orange means you're looking specifically for sex and glitter flags queer, with colour of glitter adding yet another meaning.

I never got the feeling that people who spotted a hanky code that didn't match what they were into would just be like "oh hi saw your flag, I'm not down with boot play but have you time for a coffee and a chat?" it always seemed more about let's get down to business and I might remember to ask your name later and that looking for socializing with someone who was flagging would be kinda wasting their time, you know?

There is a way to do it as an ally but that way should still center queerness and is something you’d have to be very careful about, I think. Like, there could be a flag color for allies?
OK. Lol at the white people thing. But I hate to break it to this person but, a LOT of people wear nail polish. It's not a queer only event. And while I can understand wanting to have something as queer only, it's a bit late to get on that horse. Nail polish colors aren't some queer only shades. You are not making some great statement, YOU ARE JUST PAINTING YOUR NAILS. BADLY.
