anyone done it? i'm not a very outgoing/confident person most of the time so i don't wanna like go places and be too scared to do anything there or talk to people :(
idk really. i was thinking of doing more than one country. maybe european capitals? i've done paris. but french is the only other language i know any of
maybe i'll just do a weekend somewhere and if it goes okay i could do more next summer
any advice on doing it while not being very outgoing?
it depends on whether or not you actually want to meet/talk to people. if you don't want to, avoid youth hostels or stick to single ensuite rooms. if you want to eliminate possibility of having to ask for directions, make sure you know your way before you go (should be very easy with google maps, i look up the places of interests in relation to my accommodation and print out quite a few city maps to carry with me)
as a woman sometimes u would attract unwanted attention, avoid bars, at least stick to the main ones in touristy areas.
the key is planning. i find that if i have everything prepared i feel less nervous about foreign surroundings. if you have to interact with people for information, hotel/hostel staff and tourist offices are the best ones to go to.
see i dunno whether to be all loner-y and avoid people or whether i should put myself in a position to force myself to interact with people and build my confidence
i've done it bb, and i'm terrible at interacting with people as well
if you're flying/training it's pretty easy, just wear headphones all the time p much
if you're driving then stick to restaurants near the road and people will expect you to be alone and traveling. i found that helped me a lot, if i was in places where travelers/tourists were expected
i love travelling alone - whenever you travel w/ people you have to compromise and do what they want and when it's just you - you do what you like and also, i've found that when i go to countries where i don't speak the language that takes the pressure off b/c it's a lot harder to tell someone is socially awkward when there's a language barrier
yeah i have a friend who spent a month in italy alone and she said she loved not having to compromise but she is a quite an outgoing and self-reliant kind of person
the language thing is a good point, lol. but then at the same time i'll be super awkward and embarrassed at having to use phrase book language
but that's the point - i'm not outgoing, i like going to museums or for walks or w/e and you can do that or just sit in your hotel room or by the pool or w/e you want
