cis / trans* in all forms
i think that cis and trans* can be used as modifiers for a lot of different identities. i think these concepts have the power to radically transform the way identities, and identity politics, are conceptualized. i do not think that cis / trans* has to be a dichotomy either. but i think that it includes as well as goes beyond gender; cis / trans* as modifiers can be used for a lot of identities including but not limited to race, ethnicity, nationality, culture, a/sexuality, size, dis/ability, and so forth. (relating to the conversations about identities such as transracial, transethnic, transabled, transsize, etc etc etc).
i think that this is simply a proposal for new language for phenomena that have always existed— whether chosen, desired, felt, innate, understood, known, unknown, the act or experiences of identifying with something different than what you are assigned happens in so many, many, many ways.
i think discourse also needs to happen about appropriation in the context of identities being fluid not with the presumption of identities being static. (not that cis / trans* expanded means identities have to be fluid, within transgender social theory, for example, identities are / should be recognized as not necessarily fluid, but also possibly fluid…. it’s many spectra, as always, and all spectra should be recognized…) because appropriation happens with fluid identities too, and the notion of fluidity or trans*-ness does not mean that appropriation questions are invalid. it simply means they have to be reexamined or treated with a different lens. and i think they are, often, treated in very complicated ways. because these are complicated things.
and i’m speaking theoretically right now because i’m trying to talk about a lot of things at once and i’m afraid and it’s hard to really articulate myself well. but if anyone has any input or furthering of the conversation that is not oppressive, i would welcome that indeed.
