honestly (and i may be reading into it, so take this with a grain of salt), but it almost sounds like they LIKE having a friend with an MI because it gives them the opportunity to be progressive and helpful or w/e like 'i'm such a good friend and person b/c i am SO understanding!' like they're in it for themselves and not because they want to be there for you
