So, I know it’s fun to bash America or bash Americans because, well, it is. But making generalizations about the entirety of America based on a few people you know, or about what you hear in the media, is not only completely unfounded, but it’s hurtful too. We all know by now not to make generalizations about Africans based on the images we see in the news, or say that all Asians are different. In fact all generalizations are annoying, wrong, and unfounded, even when targeted at a privileged country and its citizens.
Here are a few quick tips not to be an asshole when talking about America if you aren’t American.

No characters have actual psychoses. That’s not how the metaphor works. It’s that when you have an invisible disability, you’re often fighting things that other people cannot “see” or understand. Like, I have an MI that is quite literally partially defined by “getting angry or sad about things for no reason”. I know there is a reason, but other people cannot see the reason, so they look at me like I’m crazy because to them, my reasoning doesn’t make sense/doesn’t exist. And when they pull that crap, sometimes I lash out. To them, it looks like I just proverbially smacked them for no reason. They don’t see what I see, or know what I know, or understand what I understand, so it becomes “lashing out at nothing.”
