Lorber, Judith. 1993. Believing is Seeing: Biology as Ideology. Gender and Society 7(4), 568-581. (which is citing the following source) Laqueur, Thomas. 1990. Making sex: Body and gender from the Greeks to Freud. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press.
Until the eighteenth century, Western philosophers and scientists thought that there was one sex and that women’s internal genitalia were the inverse of men’s external genitalia: the womb and vagina were the penis and scrotum turned inside out (Laqueur 1990). Current Western thinking sees women and men as so different physically as to sometimes seem two species. The bodies, which have been mapped inside and out for hundreds of years, have not changed. What has changed are the justifications for gender inequality.
When the social position of all human beings was believed to be set by natural law or was considered God-given, biology was irrelevant; women and men of different classes all had their assigned places. When scientists began to question the divine basis of social order and replaced faith with empirical knowledge, what they saw was that women were very different from men in that they had wombs and menstruated. Such anatomical differences destined them for an entirely different social life from men.
In actuality, the basic bodily material is the same for females and males, and except for procreative hormones and organs, female and male human beings have similar bodies (Naftolin and Butz 1981). Furthermore, as has been known since the middle of the nineteenth century, male and female genitalia develop from the same fetal tissue, and so infants can be born with ambiguous genitalia (Money and Ehrhardt 1972). When they are, biology is used quite arbitrarily in sex assignment.Suzanne Kessler (1990) interviewed six medical specialists in pediatric intersexuality and found that whether an infant with XY chromosomes and anomalous genitalia was categorized as a boy or a girl depended on the size of the penis-if a penis was very small, the child was categorized as a girl, and sex-change surgery was used to make an artificial vagina. In the late nineteenth century, the presence or absence of ovaries was the determining criterion of gender assignment for hermaphrodites because a woman who could not procreate was not a complete woman (Kessler 1990, 20).
This fucking monster sat in the church for an hour and prayed with them before he started killing. He was welcomed into that Black Church. You know why, because a Church is meant to be a safe haven. That Black Church didn’t care that he was white, they didn’t turn him away at the door he was welcomed in. Mental illness my ass he had a plan and he executed it. Racism isn’t a mental illness it’s something that is taught. #CharlestonShooting #PrayForCharleston
Of course they’re already screaming “mental illness!” This savage ass country would bend over backwards to protect a white boy terrorist
do you think mb now one of the reasons ppl don't like to admit their faves have flaws is in response to how ott tumblr is about them
like if you relate to a character and they have flaws and people talk about how shit they are and how they deserve being beaten up or w/e it makes them upset, bc you can't be flawed and still worth dignity or w/e
so ofc it bothers them when their faves have flaws
tumblr (and fandom in general) has a rly black and white view to a characters morality, it's like their values come straight from saturday morning cartoons
Lets talk about Autistic and psychotic Bucky and how what was done to him interacts with his neurodivergence on a daily basis Bucky Barnes forgetting to wash for days on end, he’s never been good at managing his own body or remembering to do things and hydra would schedule ‘washes’ for him so he’s used to someone making him Bucky getting frustrated as he tries to make a sandwich, trying to remember all the steps but his mind keeps going out of order and he can’t ever remember making them before and it takes him at least 30 minutes every time to get it right Bucky setting little alarms throughout the day to signal when he should be doing something, it works pretty well but there are still times he hears an alarm and goes to turn it off but forgets what it was for and ends up staring at it thinking before realising four hours have passed and he was away somewhere Bucky still being partially convinced that his freedom is all an elaborate scheme by hydra to test his loyalty, on some days he has to message Sam, Steve and Nat warning them to stay away since he’s scared he’ll be made to kill them again Bucky waking up every day to sweep his apartment for cameras and microphones and anything else suspicious, he finds its actually a very helpful morning routine, calming him down and providing a sense of repetition and stability
"It was the first time a woman was going to die in a Jurassic Park movie. We're an equal opportunities bunch of murderers! So we felt, 'Alright, let's make it the most spectacular death we can possibly imagine - let's involve multiple animals from sea and air...' I love this moment so much. We're playing on the audience's expectation and jadedness. You drop her in the water and immediately everyone goes, 'Oooh, I know what's going to happen.' But you don't. Then the 'birds' start coming in and you get distracted by that and suddenly [it] happens. I knew I'd be accused of killing the Brit! Well, Katie's Irish so she had no problem with it. But we definitely struggled over how much to allow her to earn her death, and ultimately it wasn't because she was British, it was because she was a bridezilla. She has one line about the bachelor party: 'Oh, all his friends are animals.' In the end, the earned death in these movies has become a bit standard and another thing I wanted to subvert. 'How can we surprise people? Let's have someone die who just doesn't deserve to die at all.'"
My real opinion on Rachel Dolezal: I feel bad for her. Terrible for her. I pity her, like I pity people who are truly suffering from a mental illness, like she clearly is. Watching her Lauer interview, it’s clear she’s a smart woman. She said she identifies as “black,” not “African American,” as the question said. When confronted with a photograph from her childhood, with blonde hair and white skin, she said the girl in the photo would “visibly” be seen as white. She also told another interviewer that she empathized with the story of Caitlyn Jenner since she feels similarly. I know it’s not PC to make the comparison, but she has a mental illness, as does Bruce Jenner. Gender dysphoria, like racial dysphoria, and the closely related body dysmorphia, are real mental illnesses and laughing at someone over it just seems wrong. There’s a difference between someone faking something like being trans, or being black, because it’s cool to do, and someone suffering from delusions from a mental disorder. Don’t normalize or praise mental illness, or pretend you’re mentally ill. She’s a troubled woman, clearly, but there are worse things out there. Assuming, of course, she didn’t do all of this for her own personal advantage.
