nothing, they help woman give birth at home or in the hospital and make sure the woman's wishes are followed

they're a thing for rich women to waste money on

they make a fair amount of money doing absolutely nothing other than saying "you can do it sweetie you're so amazing you're so brave do you want another pillow" and people tell them they're such beautiful selfless people for it

my mom is poor and had a doula when she had me and my sister

(Anonymous) 2012-05-16 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
lol

define "poor"

if you can afford a doula your ass ain't poor sry

(Anonymous) 2012-05-16 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
not all doulas charge out the ass for their services

(Anonymous) 2012-05-16 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but many hospitals and birthing centers have doulas on staff, so there's no additional charge. a lot of the time they're training to be midwives and putting in their volunteer hours.

that's not really what doulas are trained to do. but anyone can decide they like to go to births and can rub someone's back and call themselves a doula. i guess they would be like that.

a good doula is amazing. but they're really expensive (in my area they're $600+) so the people who really need the support and someone to help advocate for them can't afford them.
