how can you tell if a cut is infected aside from the skin around it looking red?

i have a cut on my nipple and i'm worried about it, but my nipples are eally red so i can't tell if they've gotten redder from the cut

heat, pain, and/or pus

swelling, pain, pus

heat is a good indicator. if the skin there is warmer than the skin surrounding it, it could be getting infected
