i'm from north carolina (appalachia tho tbf) and all the weddings i've ever been to were like a 20 min ceremony followed by a 20-30 min reception where everyone just milled around talking and then left whenever they wanted to
but yeah it sounds like that's not rly a standard thing.
i'm from the uk (and my family's christian, i'll add). here the wedding is probably more than an hour long, then everyone goes back and the reception is probably at least three or four hours, because people usually have dinner together, then toasts and speeches, then party til bedtime. and there are gifts, but usually given at the wedding.
