Another historical perspective, in the South these two words, lady and woman, had a definite racist function. I learned in the 1930's, I was explicitly instructed, that is, to call a white female person "lady" and to call a female person of color "woman." I was, therefore, aware of the 'misuse' but not of just how subversive my mother was actually being in that time and place when she consistently referred to "Mrs. Jones, the ironing lady." Mrs. Jones sat at the table and had lunch with my mother, who had several small children and a couple of miscarriages and deeply appreciated the help with her work load on the Tuesdays Mrs. Jones came to iron.

Later on, of course, peer pressure prevailed for a while and I became very conscious of "girls" vs "young ladies" and all the other classist and racist signals that help to keep our society so sick. Later still, as a thinking adult and a budding feminist and apprentice decent human being, I have tried to scour my vocabulary and rid myself of the terms that signal disrespect for any person or group of people. It does require regular review and I value this space for that, among so many other reasons.
