because they didn't think it would follow the manga/didn't know that much about the manga and didn't expect blatant gay romance in their anime because it just doesn't exist ever unless it's really subtle subtext
i legit saw comments in some of the streams i watched going: "man, this show is awesome but those two are getting a little too affectionate for my comfort"
