also there's been some research (if you're bipo I) into how psychosis can have a snowball effect, so untreated psychotic episodes could lead to longer/more severe psychotic episodes.
some people also only ever have one or two manic episodes, for whatever reason. we really still don't know that much about how mis work, since the brain is v v v complex.
