if u live in a major city this isn't a problem but if ur an out of state student in a small college town or just living in a small town generally there are all these bizarre liquor laws that get followed to the t because they don't need/want trouble from the cops, it's p. common
a lot of massachusetts bars won't accept out of state IDs - i mentioned below, the td garden (hockey/basketball arena) won't accept out of state ids unless you're over 25
