dogs like great pyrs and newfies are typically v gentle
but tbh i'd be skeptical about getting any kind of big dog as your first one, they can be a lot harder to handle for obvious reasons, and if you aren't used to asserting yourself over a large-ish animal like that it could be a problem

idk if you haven't been around dogs for a long time before i think it's kind of dangerous to start off with a big one
unless you adopt one that is oldish and more mellow

rescuing a greyhound might be an option? they actually are p lazy dogs, they can just sprint when they want to. and a lot of them need homes
