my bff who has a long history of si keeps talking to me about how she bought a knife and it's really pretty and she's keeping it in her room.

would it be inappropriate of me to just ask about it? like just ask if there's anything she wants to talk about or something? or should i just not bring it up at all?

i'd ask. if she keeps bringing it up she almost certainly wants you to inquire.

not inappropriate - maybe like ask how she's doing in general first, before mentioning that the knife talk made you a little worried? how she reacts will tell you a lot, and it will be better than not knowing
