okay I get that the "basic" genres of stories have all been told already

but some ppl explain bigger similarities, like the hunger games and battle royale, or shutter island and the cabinet of dr caligari (and many others lbr for some reason ppl love that story) by saying "oh well all stories have been told before." do u think those sort of ppl are wrong?

because I've written stories, and watched movies, that don't seem to resemble any other story so closely as, say, shutter island resembles dr caligari

i think any plot or twist that can be summed up in one sentence - "the killer is actually his split personality!", "youre a patient, not a doctor/cop," "chosen one defeats hitler clone" are a lot less original than any plot that can't be summed up so easily

i could honestly see it with battle royale/hunger games. because everything about hunger games suggests that collins modeled it after gladiatorial battles in ancient rome, and then modernized it to be post-apocalyptic reality tv. it just ended up being super similar, but neither is the first "kids fight to the death for rich people's entertainment" book ever written

those are the examples ppl use bc they're easy to see and understand. once you get deeper than obvious plot elements/character tropes ppl's eyes kind of glaze over if u start talking about the hero's journey
