honestly i can't think of a good way to write giles out without making him look like a dick

i would have even preferred something like 'giles has a magical disease that can only be treated by a witches coven in england'

it could have even set up him returning with their power at the end of the season!! anything about it being necessary that giles had to leave, not something he did by choice. i completely understand tony head wanting to take time off from the show but jfc they wrote it in the most terrible way possible
