When fandom assigns value exclusive to male characters and their relationships, it becomes a vicious cycle
And let’s be honest about our motives and behavior here
Characters of color get disproportionately ignored/villified no matter how involved they are in a story
Fandom should be free from misogyny
Whether or not the source material is misogynistic, throwing female characters under the bus is misogyny
And misogyny doesn’t get a pass just because it’s directed at fictional characters
People will always find more reasons to rationalize their hatred of female characters
No seriously, people come up with all kinds of reasons to focus on the white guys and not demand better from their media, including our legitimate discomfort with watching particular stories happen to women
And it’s even worse for women of color
And fandom insists that they’re totally not racist because haha of course
Writing female characters shouldn’t be the fanfic equivalent of eating your vegetables
