Hey, I have no problem with anyone wanting to change the official flag of the state. I can see that since too many people view the flag as representing slavery and hate crimes that it might be good to change it.
My issue is the people who see a Southerner with a flag on their truck, or hanging in a restaurant, and get angry and accuse those people of racism. Or the guy on here who saw someone who was white wearing a T-shirt with the flag on it and wanted to punch them.
The Union Jack is a symbol of Britain. The ones who colonized a lot of places, killing and subjugating people. But when I walk into a pub and see a UK flag I don't associate it with the evil acts the British government perpetrated in the past. I recognize that the person flies it to celebrate their heritage.
Maybe the Starts and Bars shouldn't be on a state flag. But it shouldn't be banned, burned, or lambasted, either.
about 20 yrs ago, u couldn't use the union jack outside of period pieces, because it had been so associated with the bnp and national front who used it so heavily that everyone else avoided it
You have Republicans who hold up elephants and Democrats that hold up donkeys. To the Republicans, the elephant means holding onto current values, being responsible financially, limiting government to a smaller role. To liberals, it means oppressing the poor, racism, and oppressing women. The Democrats, the donkey means using the government to help the poor, protecting the rights of minorities, and freedom. To conservatives, it means spreading corrupt ideas, destroying marriage, and stealing money from the rich to enable freeloading poor.
Now these two symbols haven't gotten to the point where they are offensive, but it's getting close.
To a Southerner, the confederate flag means their culture and all the good that goes along with it. To those outside who have been told it means racism and slavery, it means just that.
