i think people are arguing so strongly against him being mentally ill because its always used as a cop-out for white mass murderers, serial killers and terrorists ("he was out of his mind/he couldn't control himself/he was struggling through a lot and just broke")

i see a lot more ppl arguing that it couldn't possibly be racism bc it's obv mental illness when it could both but no one seems to get that hate crimes can be committed by ppl who are more or less of sound mind
