Just a general post bought up by recent Steven Universe talk, but also that’s just a fandom thing I’ve noticed in general?
There can be a lot of discourse in regards to a character being abusive or not, and it can definitely be upsetting to see a character accused of that.
But please also remember… that most of the people who bring up that stuff are people who are see it and are reminded of their own abuse they went through.
And it can be mega invalidating to have an immediate argument thats just. No see they’re just being a COMPLEX CHARACTER! People are complex, most abusers have backstories that explain to where they got today. That does not stop it from being abuse. Having motivations and reasons does not stop it from being a shitty action. And a lot of people who have experienced abuse often have troubles with ‘well, they had their own problems’ or ‘well i provoked it’. And all this is amplified a bunch when the abuser is an adult figure.
I’m not taking a particular stand with this post, but please remember this context when debating this particular point.
I love Pearl as a character, but as someone who’s been abused a lot of fandom discussion is very uncomfortable and I know a lot of others who feel the same.
