a while ago I read an article about how dogs love us back, but recognize that we’re different from them, while cats see us as bigger and clumsier than them, but do not consider us different

It’s true; cats see us as giant dumb hairless babies. That’s why they bring us half-dead prey– to teach us how to hunt and eat properly. That’s why they attack when we rub their bellies– that’s how parent cats teach kittens to defend themselves. That’s also why they meow– cats communicate with other adults on a frequency we can’t hear, but meow at kittens because their ears aren’t fully developed. They even specialized a set of meows they use only for humans, because we are especially deaf babies.

is this true? i want to believe my cat just thinks i'm another cat, but a bigger and dumber one

i think some cats are just lazy/really like belly pets

idk i've read other articles that said cats seem to recognize us as not-cats because they communicate w/us differently than they do other cats. like, they meow more and louder, and purr louder

yeah, cats don't really meow to each other very often, if at all

but they have specific meows that they only use with humans, that have the same frequency (i think) as human babies crying, bc they know we will respond

that's true, they end up conditioned to use the most obnoxious baby-sounding meows possible bc they get rewarded for those lol

yup

one weird thing i've read is that even cats who have never had much human contact, like trapped ferals, will meow at humans but not other cats, so it's like they can communicate to each other how to communicate to humans

it was someone on tumblr who claimed to be studying animal behavior, though, not a legit scientific source, so idk

whoah cool :o

maybe it could be an inherited instinct somehow? epigenetics are pretty wacky. but then again even feral cats usually live near humans and domestic cats so they can maybe learn by interacting with them? idk

this can't be right

and it's tumblr shit so it probably isn't
