all those things are associated w dangerous predators dumbaline. no shit we're intellectually scared of sharp fangs and things that remind us of death/disease (emaciation, sunken eyes, pale skin, etc)
not to mention i think this is some heavy handed vampire reference and vampires weren't always spooky scary, the first vampires were described as being more like succubi
