As for the financial issues, my mother would tweak the order she prepared some recipes - such as adding the meats in later and making a secondary portion for me. Yes, it was an extra step, but a lot of the same basic recipes can be used and besides the tad bit of work, there wasn't an extra cost.
Thankfully, my mother didn't see my morals - no matter how big or small - as hell.
