In 1973, Beth was one of the organizers West Coast Lesbian Conference held at the University of California, Los Angeles, and had played benefits to help finance it. However the Conference split over whether Elliot should be allowed to perform. The Gutter Dykes protested the presence of a ‘man’. Two-thirds of the women present voted to allow Beth to remain, and she performed as had been arranged, but she left after the performance.
