Jared cringes. “The nurse said they need to monitor it. Checking the heartbeat and testing for possible infection before they decide what to do.”
“The baby’s not ready yet. He isn’t due for another 3 weeks.” Jensen can’t stem the constant flow of tears falling down his face. He squirms in his seat feeling sore and edgy. His back aches and he can only find a little ease in pulling up his shirt and rubbing the tight skin stretched over his baby.
Jared never takes his eyes off the road and when he speaks, his tone is curt and brusque. “I don’t know what you want me to do, Jensen. I don’t know a single thing about pregnancies and births. It’s not like I knew about any of this. What the fuck were you thinking hiding something like that from me?”
Jensen registers Jared’s voice but is too anxious about the baby to process any of what he is saying. He always imagined the moments before the birth of his first child to be completely different. To worry about whether the baby is even going to make it until its birth was not part of the plan. New sobs escape him and all he wants to do is protect his baby, so he continuously strokes his belly and murmurs soft words to his unborn child.
“We’re here.” Jared pulls the car to a stop and is halfway out the door before turning back to Jensen. “Stay here, I’ll just go and find some help.”
