idk, maybe he was god-tier from the beginning. vriska said she was the only one, but his attack against the black king was more powerful than hers.

or maybe he got bored during the last year, they said karkat was the only one who could ever find him

or maybe kanaya killed him during the last year, but his quest bed was just lying around or something

yeah, vriska changed her clothes a lot, too. she was god-tier the whole time she was chatting up john, but was in jeans and a flannel a lot of the time
