ffs, library volunteer lady, why are you trying to take my work away? go shelve books where it's actually needed--i.e., not in my section, but somewhere like the 700s, which is always such a mess that before you can shelve one book, you have to restore five to their actual place.
actually, i know why you like to shelve in my section--because i keep it in apple-pie order and it's ~easy to shelve books there.
also, today you very helpfully took all the judith michael, barbara michaels, and fern michaels books off the shelves where they were perfectly in order, then mixed up the books and reshelved them all in alphabetical order by title.

I'm wondering if there aren't other reasons.
Some processes, like highlights, take hours, but the stylist isn't working on one head during the processing period. Some styles like plaits take a long time AND they're labor-intensive. And like anything, these are skills that have to be practiced for the stylist to be any good at them. If you walk into a salon and want this done, you want someone who does it all the time, which would be a salon where more clients get this done. It seems to me that most people who want edgy, punked out hair and bright colors go to salons that do more of that, not whatever random place is open when they walk by.
Ditto use of relaxing/perming chemicals. If you're getting it done, you want to go to someone who specializes so your hair isn't fried to hell; it's a big risk. A lot of places can't cut anybody's curly hair properly, period. So I wonder if there's not a market to offer these services if you're getting 1-2 clients a week who trust you to do them.<.\/i>
