It was more based on the fact that (I thought) we had agreed that boutique and designer shoes have a certain quality to them that you don't find elsewhere, regardless of whether the design is to one's personal taste or not. I didn't think they would be to your taste; It was clear to me that we have different tastes in shoes. However, I thought you would defend them as thoughtfully-designed well-made shoes.
