i really detest my family, especially my mother and i've tried to keep away from them but they continually try to contact me. now my mom and my brother found my address after two years and i'm scared they're going to try and come to my place.
So I came back from lunch today to find that 1.) a large screw had been screwed into my wall that we aren’t even allowed to use staples in or tape on. And 2.) one of my student’s parents had drilled a screw into my wall and placed a large, framed poster that says “IN GOD WE TRUST” in huge letters, flanked by the state and US flags.
The parent did this in all the grade level teacher’s rooms as a surprise. I find this completely invasive, as I was told by my admin that my room is MY room. I’ve spent hundreds of dollars of my own money over the last two years on designing my room, and have even researched some of the best methods of classroom arrangement. I have worked hard to try to create an optimal learning environment for my students. I have also worked hard to create a non-bias, non-religious classroom that doesn’t exclude or include any student’s religions. I believe that students deserve a neutral space in which to learn, and shouldn’t be bombarded by what the adults around them personally believe. I want my kids to learn to think for themselves. I’m not even sure that poster is okay to have in a public school.
I put the poster in my closet. I’ve already had the one student point their finger at me and accuse me of not liking God.
How do I handle this without looking like a jerk who hates God and America? I teach in the Bible Belt, so this is especially tricky.
