long answer for geisha: geisha were mainly comprised of girls and women who had been allowed by their parents (sometimes w/ coercion, sometimes w/o) to join a geisha school. geisha were valued entertainers bc they basically spent all day from the time they were like 4 learning to dance and perform on musical instruments and do other high skill entertaining. they were not allowed to marry or have suitors until they retired and altho sex w/ clients happened it was not condoned

this is general and 'geisha' covers a huge amount of ppl over many periods
