Normally I try and let ignorant shit pass me by on tumblr, but I am not here for this at all. All you have to do is Look At Their Mission Statement but I’ll lay it out here too.

1) Medieval POC is run by a white person: Wrong. She’s addressed it multiple times on her blog that she is a person of color, but also that she is not black. This isn’t a secret.

2) “Eurocentric commentary” = “ The focus of this blog is to showcase works of art from European history that feature People of Color. All too often, these works go unseen in museums, Art History classes, online galleries, and other venues because of retroactive whitewashing of Medieval Europe, Scandinavia, and Asia. …

My purpose in creating this blog is to address common misconceptions that People of Color did not exist in Europe before the Enlightenment, and to emphasize the cognitive dissonance in the way this is reflected in media produced today.” http://medievalpoc.tumblr.com/missionstatement

I don’t really know what else there is to say about this, except that to say that while of course it is important to learn about art history & non-colonial/whitewashed history in places other than Europe, that is not and never has been the purpose of the blog, and given the amount of racists that she engages with on a regular basis who think a multicultural London is a 21st century invention, it is a niche that needs filling and academic support.

3) Most of her posts are literally just pieces of art that feature people of color.

“Although the focus is toward art dating from the fall of the Roman Empire until about 1650, it will also include Baroque and/or Early Modern pieces, as well as works from places other than Europe, Scandinavia and Asia.Ancient Greek, Egyptian and Celtic works featuring People of Color are also fair game”

As for the research explanations: she links to all of her sources and actively encourages people to seek their own explanations and not take the blog at its word. She admits publicly when she is wrong, a lot like the way academia is supposed to work, because it is a conversation.

4) It seems pretty stupid to compare being a salaried employee as an adjunct professor to being an academic blogger providing resources for free on the internet and relying on donations.
But if you want to:
Here’s the link to medievalpoc’s patreon: https://www.patreon.com/medievalpoc?ty=h#/_=_

She’s making, as of 7/27/15: $1044/mo, or $12,528 a year.
The average adjunct professor makes, NPR reports in 2013, $20-$25,000 annually, and payscale.com states an average of $31,000 annually.

Even if medievalpoc makes it to $2,000 a month, she’s not making any more than the average adjunct professor; and adjunct professors are paid shit.

5) Seriously quit talking shit about medievalpoc, which is doing wonders to undermine the “historical accuracy in fantasy novels” and “the only black people in Europe were slaves until Recent History,” unless you can cite your fucking sources.
