any entomologist bibas on

i've noticed in the morning, there's always a few moths laying directly under where the back porch light hangs on the wall

i thought they were dead but recently i tried to pick them up because there were more than usual and then the moth started flapping frantically

all of them ended up being alive but they couldn't do more than crawl, cling and flap without flying

why is that? i'm guessing the ones i never picked up were alive too, is it just they tire out from flying against the light when its dark and they drop straight to the ground in exhaustiong after?
