why do catholics nearly worship the virgin mary (compared to other christian churches)? in my experience, catholics put more faith in mary than they do in jesus.
Oh wow, this is an old school beef between Catholicism and Protestantism—like, actual John Calvin old; founders of major branches of Protestantism old. I’m sort of surprised we’re still rehashing this one, tbh. But hey, my Catholic school prepped me for this question so let’s go.
The dogmatic answer is: Catholics don’t worship Mary. Only God—and, by tripartite extension, Jesus—are worthy of worship. (Thomas Aquinas uses the Latin term “latria” to describe the adoration due the Trinity.) But like the saints and angels, Catholics venerate (“dulia”) Mary for her special dignity as the Mother of God and co-redemptor of humanity. Mary, chosen above all women to be the handmaid of the Lord and witness to Jesus’s life, is worthy of special honor; in God’s eyes she is literally the second best human in existence.
(And Jesus really only gets ‘actual best human’ on the technicality of being both fully divine and fully human, so…)
Additionally, Catholicism is steeped in a rich tradition of intercession—the belief that we are very small, and our voices weak before the great and terrible throne of God. So we pray to holy men and women to speak for us, hoping that their voices might reach His ears. Mary, as faithful and gentle mother of His son, is thought to be the most powerful and the most merciful.
So I can understand why, from the outside, it looks as though Catholics are worshiping Mary—we have a lot of cathedrals that bear her name, a lot of prayers to her in her various guises, a lot of candles and icons and statues that bear her image. But we honor her as a reflection of God’s glory, as an intermediary between us and the divine, and as a reminder of how hallowed humanity can become. Not as God.
