And when you parade around characters going “She’s a LESBIAN THAT FIGHTS CRIME” I have to think:
What is so important about them being a lesbian in terms of the story?
When is she going to engage in lesbian activity that is going to lead to meaningful character development?
Is being a lesbian going to become a plot point?
I’m going to be LOOKING FOR HER TO DO LESBIAN THINGS BECAUSE YOU TOLD ME SHE IS A LESBIAN, YOU GOOF
So when you introduce me to a character that is supposed to be really focused on their actions and what they do and the first thing you cram into my face is their sexuality, I’m immediately going to look for that sexuality to be used elsewhere. Because that’s what readers do! And that’s what the other anon did! “You’re telling me they’re bisexual, so do they do bisexual things?” At least they gave the benefit of the doubt and this is the thanks they get! They did everything they could to respect your characterization! “They’re a Lesbian, I sure hope they do Lesbian Things” and you get mad at them for that?
God, I’d like to just piss on this ask, that makes me mad.
You tell me they’re heterosexual, I am going to be looking for heterosexual activity down the road. It’s just as bullshitty to be told that a character is heterosexual and have nothing in the story that has anything to do with heterosexual activities. It is bullshit! But “better” writers disguise it, at least. They shove in a Love Interest! Maybe they don’t! Maybe they’ll trick you into there being no Love Interest and then BOOM THERE IT IS. They never would just go, “Oh by the way, THIS GUY - this guy is mad heterosexual and is likes to bang chicks. BUT HE WON’T BECAUSE THIS STORY IS ABOUT CARD GAMES ON MOTORCYCLES”
