i've honestly had more issues getting the wrong edition of a fiction book than I have getting an earlier edition of a textbook but it's def something to ask your professor about first
i've had it both ways. my physics teacher told us we can use an early edition, because the only difference were the questions used and he didn't grade that anyway.
my medieval history prof, on the other hand, told us definitely to get the latest edition because it was changed a lot from the previous one.
