I seem to remember Vonnegut writing somewhere about the difference in writing styles between men and women--namely, that women were flitty and just wanted to get something down before they went back and edited it to death, and that men were more methodical and plodding, and so did not have to rewrite all that much since whatever made it to the page was as good as it was reasonably going to get. Of course, this was assuming that all writers would take the advice of a fucking editor.
