tbf most poc who practice christianity that i know of mixed in their beliefs or used the church as a base of organizing for social justice/civil rights so it's not entirely oppressive.

except that in many (not most, but many, at least in the pre-columbian americas and the philippines) of the cultures where christian and especially catholic colonialism was a huge deal, it was inherently much more oppressive toward women than the native religions, and obviously provided colonizers a tool to oppress the colonized.

it's nice that some of these cultures are using catholicism as a tool to organize, but in many of them, it's still people of european descent who have the most power, and who are using the church to fight other people also of european descent. and women aren't getting much out of it in most cases

like the catholic church backed the people power revolt to unseat marcos in the philippines ... and put in place the super-wealthy aquino family (look up hacienda luisito) and people like gloria magacapal-arroyo (who simply picked up the extrajudicial killings where marcos left off). and despite women leaders there, a lot of women still get shit on. most of the people with money and power are mestizo families.

the catholic church isn't unseating the status quo in these places, it's just helping (rich, mixed) leaders take it over quietly from their (rich, white) previous leaders. and then fooling the poor, oppressed, brown underclass into thinking that things are better, and they're gonna go to heaven anyway so just grin and bear any indignities and oppression that's still around.

If God had a name, what would it be
And would you call it to his face
If you were faced with him in all his glory
What would you ask if you had just one question

And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home

If God had a face what would it look like
And would you want to see
If seeing meant that you would have to believe
In things like heaven and in jesus and the saints and all the prophets

And yeah yeah god is great yeah yeah god is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
He's trying to make his way home
Back up to heaven all alone
Nobody calling on the phone
Except for the pope maybe in rome

And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if god was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
Just trying to make his way home
Like a holy rolling stone
Back up to heaven all alone
Just trying to make his way home
Nobody calling on the phone
Except for the pope maybe in rome

especially cold war era latin america when the church stood silently as right wing governments kidnapped and killed leftists who often times were the poorest or of indigenous descent. the few that spoke out were venerated but everyone likes to forget the fact that everyone else stayed compliant with those right wing governments

and even things like liberation theology were rejected by the church because they didn't fucking care about the poor

women in the AIM movement/other native movements in the usa woudl commonly pointout that men being sexist was an effect of colonialism, so if men were for decolonialization then they should not be sexist

i think chicana feminists said something similar but idr

no, i haven't, but i will check it out. thank you for the rec, biba.

that said, adapting to forced conversion with syncretism doesn't make the catholic church any less oppressive.
